That Ship Has Sailed

by AJ Saur

And, yet, I stand at the end of this pier
in ovation of the horizon—its long stretch

of periphery, the far wings of a seagull
from which you are certain to emerge in a bow

of catamaran or rowboat. My mates will clap
my back exclaiming, What faith! What solitary vision!

before I ride my runabout out to embrace you
as one returned home from captivity, from some other

land where you were chained to a rock, exposed
to the elements, spent every day peering through the mist—

clear-eyed about what you missed.
